Kidney stones begin as a tiny piece of crystal in the kidney, and typically would be carried out of the kidney during normal urine flow. Sometimes the piece of crystal becomes lodged in the kidney and attracts other crystals. Because the crystals have sharp edges, if one piece of crystal comes into contact with another crystal, they tend to become entangled and this is how the stone is formed.
A stone can 'catch' other pieces of crystal and therefore grow bigger. 90 percent of all kidney stones are usually 5 millimetres (1/4 inch) or smaller. Some kidney stones grow much larger and can get as big as a golf ball (yikes - that brings tears to the eye just thinking about it).
Because the crystal has sharp edges, as the stone grows it's sticks into the surrounding tissue, which can be the kidneys, urinary tract or bladder. As the surrounding tissue moves, the sharp edges aggravate the tissue and cause pain - excruciating pain. Also a stone can block the urinary track causing additional problems, like infections or damaging the kidney.
Now the question is: How to pass those kidney stones without pain?
The secret to passing kidney stones pain free is to 'mush' the kidney stones so that they dissolve into small sand like particles. They then pass from your system without catching the sides of the urinary tract or sticking into the surrounding tissue. It is easy for a small grain that is less than 1 millimetre to pass along a 5 millimetre tube without causing any pain, especially when the stone has been 'mushed' and the sharp edges of the crystal have been 'smoothed' and no longer aggravate its surrounds.
